I've grown them outside in the garden...they make nice foliage plants, along with coleus. In my garden they grew quite tall...over 2', and almost as wide. I'm not sure which cultivar it was, though.

Last year, I grew Persian Shield in a container. Fast growing, about 2' tall and as wide. Needs lots of water, burns in direct sun, lots of pruning to keep from getting straggley. They're easy to root in water from cuttings. Though I love purple plants, I haven't decided if I'm going to grow it again this year because of its watering requirements - oh, I probably will! Maybe because they were "new" to the area last year, Persian Shield was overpriced considering how easy they are to start.
Good luck!

Cricket,
Did they need alot of water???
Try something called Polymer Crystals
When you pot up your plant that requires alot of moisture, you take a certain amount of this,
and put it in a bowl/cup or some container,
measure the amount you want and then fill with some water, let it stand for whatever the directions say on the container..
The whe you're ready to fill your potting soil,
you take the mixer of the polymer crystals and mix with a certain amount of potting soil, and fill the pot/container up about half way....
Put your plant in and fill with plain regular potting soil *with out the polymer crystals.*
The crystals only want to be in the bottom of the pot/container, as you want to keep the roots on the bottom and not migrant to the top searching for water..
But it helps with not having to water so much..
It's great for hanging pots/containers that dry out in the wind alot too!!!!

Just a thought: Persian shield looks nice in combination with another plant called Flamingo Flower. Both are perennials, have about the same light requirements, and about the same water requirements. I never tried to propagate them, but it's nice to know they're easy to start. I'll have to get some more now!

Thanks, Weezie, I'll keep my eye out for polymer crystals. Does Wally World carry them?
Flamingo Flower with Purple Shield does sound pretty.

That is a really really pretty plant. Does anyone have a picture of the flamingo flower? I love flowers that will tolerate shade and a lot of water. I live in an apartment with a small bit of county land behind that the landlord says I can do anything I want with because the county ignores it and he is left to mow the grass there and prune the trees back. He does say that if i plant i must also weed, but being on disability just about anything that will keep me busy is a plus. The lot is about 75 feet long and about 8 feet wide and has three trees on it one on each end and one in the middle but they don't block the sun much. I am so looking forward to trying my hand at gardening. So far all my herbs are up and working towards getting big enough to transplant in April. And I have started the ipomopsis, zinnia, dianthus, amarath, & moss roses inside. I have also started some roma tomato plants but I may have waited to long to start them unless of course we have the really warm fall like we had last year.

Just a note...flamingo flower is easy to propagate by cuttings, and from what I've seen, the Persian shield is, too.

Persian Shield: Just back from lunch and I stopped at my favorite nursery. I've been looking for a Persian Shield since last year. I ran across them at my favorite nursery. "Gorgeous". I even went so far and bought a pair of 3 gallon containers for $40.00 total! They are everything that that pictures show they are.
It is a must have.

While flipping through an older issue of Women's Day, I came across a small photo of a plant that looks rather lovely, which they labelled as Persian Shield.
The comment is "The astonishing iridescent colors of the Persian Shield's leaves make this potted plant unique. The spear-shaped leaved actually shimmer in the sunlight & masses of small, blue, funnel-shaped flowers appear in late summer....grows to be 12" high and can be put outside during frost free months."
Has anyone seen this plant in real life? Does anyone know any more about it?
