I sprinkled some columbine seeds over my fall partial shade bed thinking that it was a little early for fall planting but......maybe it would be ok. I never expected that they would sprout now. The directions I read said they needed to chill. Will the sprouts survive and be hardy enough to survive the winter. I'm in zone 7a I think.

Oh, yeah, not to worry,
those puppies are very hardy..
Mine will even be green alllllll winter long
up here, zone 5, peakin' out from under
the snow, any chance they can get...

They often will start from seed right now,
it's cooler weather, and they love cold...

No worries.. [thumb]

Thanks Weezie, I just didn't expect them to do that. I'm glad they will be ok. I thought I had lost the mauve columbine that I got as a starter plant this spring but I noticed today that it has some tiny new leaves at it's center so I guess it's comming back. That is so cool. (I must be stuck in the 60's with the "cool" thing. I expect to say groovy any minute now, lol.) Some of the seeds I got in trade are the larger 30" columbine with flowers up to 4 inches across. I can't wait to see those lol.

Thankyou for keeping me straight.

Stinking leaf miners rip my darn Columbine to pieces every darn year. I finally gave up on them this summer, because they would eat up all the Columbine, and start moving to my Hollyhocks!
No more Columbine for me.

The leaf minor's actually don't harm the plant,
just look ugly...

There is another culprit though that eats the
leaves...
They're little green eating machines called
Cabbage Loopers...
They're the same color as the leaves and blend
right in, you never see them until the plant is
half devoured I swear...

so I shouldn't have put my columbine over by the lettuce. Or the lettuce by the columbine actually since the columbine got planted first.

Or does the little buggy like lettuce?

I have never seen those green catapillars on any of my lettuces', and I grown romaine, black seeded simpson and red leaf... sooooooooo I'm sayin' no to those varieties...
