Here is a quote from my Ortho All About Pruning book:
"Main consideration is to maintain umbrella-like shape. Remove crossing and wrong-way branches. Thin excessive inside growth which appears occasionally and train upward to promote layered effect.
When to prune: When dormant, early spring."
Is that any help?

You're welcome! And welcome to the forum, too!
If you're in PA, you'll probably prune about when I prune here, which is in March, right about when I can't stand being inside any more.
Late winter or early spring is a good time to prune because without the leaves, you can really see clearly the branch structure of your tree and make nice, clean cuts close to the trunk.
Don't try pruning now, as it would encourage the tree to generate tender new growth, which would then get nipped by the first frosts.
You're lucky to have such a beautiful form of maple.
Good luck!
