Hi phil2,
In my experience this is completely natural. No need to cut it off, as someone here on this board once said,
"You can cut off dieing traps or just leave them alone. After all, in the wild nobody goes around cutting off traps!"
I just leave mine alone and they just become part of the potting medium.
Good luck with it, I really enjoy mine!!!
