Can I take a steam/leaf from a Japanese Maple and stick it in water or soil to grow?

They root pretty good with rooter pots, but I had a couple of cuttings taken from my mom's Acer palmatum atropurpureum. (5 or 6 weeks ago) I stuck them in the ground next to the north side of my house. One of them is still looking very good, so maybe it's taking???
