In a gardening book I have there is a suggestion of using a terracotta pot (no holes) as a mini 'pond' with a water lily and a few, tiny, mosquito-eating fish. They used urn-style pots and I think that's a pretty neat idea. Has anyone ever done that?

Hi! I grow several water lilies in pots. I wouldn't use a terra cotta pot unless it is glazed though. The water will seep through it. Last year I had one with dwarf papyrus, pickerel rush, taro and a water lily. I don't usually use fish but do use a mosquito killer in them.
I use those new light weight pots.
They like a lot of sun but other then that are rather easy to care for.

I grew water lillys in a barrel pond.I had bought a liner, but they sell plastic drop in liners in the states for $20.Its proably about the same liner versis a drop in liner, but the drop in would last& can also be used seperately alone as well.
I think the clay would be harder to keep in your climate, but could always move indoors for them cold months.
I out grew my barrell pond.too many plants& then they grew too boot. 1 cat tail turned into 12+ by end of year.

I will age ungracefully until I become an old woman in a small garden..doing whatever the Hell I want!
