Squash

Sorry, I'm not sure how this site works yet, so I will post my question again. When I plant squash, they come up beautifully and then die off. I think there's some kind of critter that gets into the stalk and kils them. Can someone help me with ID and solution? Thanks!

The only pic I have is the memories of the last four or five years of dead plants. Sorry. I recall that the stalks were eaten from the inside out.
