I've got lots of zucchini's starting but as soon as they get 4" or so, they start to yellow and die. I am a new gardener and so far have some tomatoes, peppers and spinach doing fine...

Welcome! It sounds like your problem may be lack of pollination. If bees are not gonna do it, you're gonna have to do the dirty deed on your own!

That's a good question which I do not have an answer for so you'll just have to wait for an answer for your own question. Be sure to let us know!

I peered into the leaves and sure enough there were lots of striped bugs. I used a spray I had on hand for insects on plants. I would prefer not to use poisons. What is a good organic pest control method? Thanks for the advice.

Organic???
A Thumb and First finger...
I am a total organic gardener when it comes to bugs, and squishin' or buckets of water *Japanese Beetles*...
Other's may come along to give you their thoughts, so hold on a bit...
Those striped beetles are cucumber beetles and they transmit a disease called... bacterial wilt.....

Yeah, cuke beetles are pretty easy to catch and squish with your fingers. This shouldn't be the cause of the squash dying though.
