I have my first tomato plant ever and need to know how much sunlight it needs

Tomatoes, as with most vegetables, like full sun with an absolute minimum of 6 hrs a day. More is definitely better. Is it in the ground or in a container?

Oh darn, I should have planted my tomatos in a different place.. Most of my plants have broke ground but I havent seen any signs of my tomatos yet, that must be why.. They do get direct sunlight for a few hours a day but I think its probably right around 6 hours..
