Sounds to me that they had powdery mildew.. Do you have them in full sun? That is what they like and do not need a lot of water as they are wild flowers by nature.

I had beautiful purple cone flowers (echenacea) until mid-july when they started changing color.
The leafs turned grey at first and now they're black. Neighbors down the street are still enjoying their purple flowers which makes me jealous with envy. I had two batches and in different ereas of the garden. Both turned black. HELP!
