Sweetpeas,
Can you tell us a little more about your garden
and how your plants are kept??
Like where are you plants kept,
In the ground, container?
What kind of soil do you have them in?
Bagged, regular garden soil, if it is, what kind
of soil is it, clay, loamy, also same for bagged,
wha't the name brand?
Have you added any fertilizers?
If so, what kind.???
What are your watering practices???
Night time, early morning, heavy waterings,
or frequent shallow waterings?

It's a ground garden with sandy clay type soil and as of late we've had more than enough rain so that I haven't needed to water them. I use Miracle Grow about once every two weeks. Thanks for the reply and any help you can offer.

Usually with a loamy soil, it drains easily..
Clay usually alot slower.. or it may stand a
wee~bit too long...
Any chance of doing some type of raised bed
in the years to come?
I switched to raised beds and am very happy
with our drainage now...
Can I ask you, did you pull out the plants
to see the roots rotting?? How is it that you
came to that diagnosis???
Is it visual to the eye??
(brown like??)
You wouldn't happen to have a picture would you??
*I think what you're discribing, I get with
some of my borage plants*
Would love to see a picture..

quote:Thanks Weezie... yeah, I guess I misnamed it. The rot is occurring right above the ground. Another problem I am having is my Watermelons are rotting on the ends(opposite end of stem).I have lost several from this. I put Tin foil under the Melons in hopes of stopping it, as it was occuring near the ground, but then I found some even with the foil under them, the same way.?. (by the way, the foil is also used as a heat magnet to speed up the growing process as I planted a little late this year). So far my Cantaloups are doing o.k.. The Tomatoes are also doing good. I appreciate any help and advice you can give concerning these problems.

I think the ends of the melons rotting might be blossom end rot. Same as what tomatoes get. The pumpkin may have collar rot. Can you move any mulch away from the point of growth of the plants and allow the stem to dry out?

The roots are rotting at the base near the ground. I try to use the least amount of any chemmical as possible on my garden, so don't know for sure but this could also be pest related. I appreciate any info!
