We have a large, purple clematis that is about 15 years old that blooms on new wood.
How do we get it to bloom all the way down the vine? It only blooms on top!
Its roots are shaded and has plenty of sun on top.

Hi Gardner guy,

This is from www.clematis.com
quote:
The Category three varieties produce flowers from the current year's growth. These clematis tend to flower mid to late summer. They should be pruned in early spring, just as the dormant vine begins to grow. This should be a hard pruning leaving only one or two nodes of growth above the ground. This type of pruning will encourage vigorous growth. The Viticella varieties are examples of category three clematis.
Hope that helps!

if it is the kind that only blooms on new growth, it's never going to have flowers all along the vine - only on the area that has the newest growth.

This is my Clematis right now.
Does it look anything like this?
Clematis
I think mine is a Jackmani Superba.
It was here when we moved in.
This is our 3rd summer and all I have done is watered it once in awhile.

GardenerGuy, I have 2 clematis that only grows on new wood like yours. In early spring, I prune the entire vine by taking off most of the small shoots and leaving any large vines. The clematis seems to do well with that. Hope that helps.
