I'm puzzled about life in general....

About three years ago we hired a landscape maintenance company to add compost to the yard, when we came home from work we found a bark/compost mix.

This was not what we asked for but the company assured us that this stuff was fine because it also had fertilizer.

Well spring rolled around and most of our flowers turned white, I removed the mix and replaced it with good organic black compost however the next two springs the flowers remain white.

Any ideas other than replacement how we might get some color back?

Any help would be great.

Thanks

what kind of flowers are you talking about?

When you say your flowers turned white, do you mean the actual blooms or are they white like mildew?

Edfe,

I am with Joclyn, what kinda flowers are you talking about????????

A couple of factors may play a role in flowers turning white, but some depend on the flower itself, and what flower's you have in different colors...
*ie: I had White and Purple Coneflowers in the same bed, and after a few years, the white turned purple... the purple is the dominant color and reverted back to it, could be stress on the white plants' part and a combination of bees transfering pollenation the others..cross breeding/pollenation*

Opps sorry about being unclear.

Azalea & Rhododendron blooms are a pure white, instead of the pink & reds that we planted.

Okay, I was thinkin' a mix up at the landscapers
when they delivered them.....

Most of the time I can say is stress that changes them..

I also had Phlox growing here from the previous owner, and after a couple of years a clump of volunteers of a different color came to the propertty, and now my original clumps are starting to show signs of the new colors, by darking the purples, and eyes inside them..

Are there any other Azalea & Rhododendron's in the immediate area??? [dunno] [dunno]

from azalea.org:

Variations of flower shapes are an important part of the appearance of a particular azalea variety. The shapes may change somewhat from year to year on the same plant, and they may change from plant to plant grown in different locations. Colors may also change in these ways. The exact reasons for these changes are not known.

azalea and rhododendron are the same genus...i never knew that! i never knew the flower color could change either!

since both plants changed color in tandem, it seems like the color change is directly related to the mulch.

i used licorice root mulch on my hydrangea and the flowers turned purple. most hydrangea can be manipulated to alter the flower color tho. and i wanted purple so the dumb luck of using the licorice root mulch worked out for me.

i don't know if you could do it with the rhody's. you could try it, tho.

here's some color change info i have no idea what type of mulching you could use to affect the color change you want...maybe just experiment?

good luck!!

azaleas & rhodies lik eacidic soil, try adding Miracid or Hollytone, etc.

The soil probably became too basic or neutral.
