Night blooming cereus?

i have one of these and one of the branches broke off. i've stuck it in water. anyone ever rooted one that way?

No, I don't have one YET !
From what I have read it states after a piece is cut off to let it heal for a week or two in the shade and then place in dry sand.
I have rooted many cactii by just letting it heal over in about a week and then pot up using damp bagged cactus soil....or I just take the healed piece and plant it outside.
