You can prune trumpet vine at any time of the year and it should give you more branching and become bushier. They do require heat and sunny days to bloom. Caution: they can become very aggressive, but the birds and butterflies love them.

We have a 6 yr old trumpet vine that just started to bloom well last year.
Should we cut it back so it will be thicker and bloom better? Its about 8 ft. tall.
