I have a few, and they are a couple years old (like 3??) and no fruit yet. Maybe this year....

One of them used to be in an area where there was bad drainage, and it looked pretty sad. Got leaves, but they were small, and not lots of new growth. When I moved it to a better spot last year, which was a little less sunny, but has great drainage, it really took off!! So Im hopeful.

I dont know much about feeding, but havent really heard all the best about Miracle Grow. Too many salts...(im sure someone can explaine better).

So, maybe you would consider moving it. I can say that they seem pretty hardy and dont mind being uprooted. Just my experience!

Good luck!!

My dad grew grapes on a what was called a grape barber in full sun, the grapes would hang down and they were easy to pick My mom made jelly with them (purple) the vines grew fast a 10 by 15 ft barber was covered with vines in 2 years you do have to prune old wood after you get grapes he never fertilized, hope maybe this helps.

springfeaver,

Dont know about the grapes, but i do like the Trillis.......ha ha

I have a Huge arbor , but it been up so long, I cant remember the beginning......I trimmed it last winter vigorously.. You cannot cut them back after February... They will weep to death.
Yep they really drip . Might be a soil problem.

Wouldn't a grape vine want fruit tree food? I'm only guessing.
What does weeping mean?
You know what always confuses me? PRUNING. The blooms and fruits on old wood vs. on new wood thing. I never can get all that to penetrate my brain cells. What's left of them.... [Big Grin]

Deborah L.

Grape vines needs loose soil like sandy or clay topsoil.. Good drainage.Open spaces with lots of sun..
To plant dig hole and fill with peatmoss and soil and manure and water well..Just plant it at the same depth as it was before.. Just to the neck,..
First year use ammonia nitrate...to Fertilize.
That is the plant food.........
Weeping means it crys a wet solution an it might kill them.. If you cut them in the winter before the spring buds come on , your safe.
Pruning is tricky........
I heard a million stories on dead and live wood.
Some one says the old wood makes the best sweetest grapes????????California winery?
I prune them , but I am not sure how to do it> ;O)

Now I am Just totally confused..
maybe I should just stick to the raspberries LOL

Maybe I should pill it and double check if I did it the right way??

Yeah we should Dodge...
Wisteria Deborah .. that is something I am more familiar with, you only cut 2year old branches or vines... see they only grow on 2 year old growth
which means I have blooms this year, after they bloom I cut only those branches off, and let the old ones grow ... cause I am possitive those are the old ones and I am affraid to cut any others.. did that make any sense at all??

Pruning causes new growth, which grapes will fruit on. Most of my books, say grapes need heavy pruning including the old wood.
by SpringFever on May 04, 2006 12:26 PM

does that mean I should chop it right down every winter??

They are 5 years old now and just starting to get not sour... try putting a few table spoons of sugar at the roots during bloom Dodge!
Also I got a dwarf variety and once they set fruit even if they are sour pick every last one.. for more the next season.. I don't know if it really works but I get more and more every year .. they grow wild here and that is what Keith told me to do..

most fruits like grages rasberries and such fruit best on 2 year wood, after that they produce less and less so you prune that to promote new growth. the new growth will take 2 years to produce good friut. if you prune each year after they get growing good you will be pruning some limbs but not all. do not cut the main stalk just the limbs.
by SpringFever on May 08, 2006 02:22 AM
Ohhh that is good to know Joe.. haha made a funny! so If I get fruit that is the best limb to cut is the one with fruit..or should I trim it the fallowing year when it starts to produce less??

The vines will produce for more than just that second year. pruning them is kind of a guessing game. when you see that they look like they they are not getting good growth on the vine (leafs)or fruit then cut it back. you might not have to cut them back to the main stalk. sometimes you might trim half way a quarter or whatever. like I said it kind of a guessing game. but pruning will promote new and more growth
by dodge on May 08, 2006 04:51 AM
Yes but your not to prune till the wood is dead.. Now what/

Spring feaver,

After the grapes was done and froze, i put the clippers to mine....They were awful thick, and I cut away the extras....Let the main stem..It has black rot or whatever that is......Who knows.
Now I read they need lots of sun so I made it thinner.
I have 8 posts......Now I decided to put my clematis on the 4 poles..LOL.....Maybe they can sweeten it up.;o)
