Boston fern trouble

my sister has a huge boston fern, it is turning brown and looking pretty droopy. She was going to throw it in the trash- but I told maybe her it could be divided and saved- But How do I go about dividing it? do I just pull the roots apart and repot the halves? is there a specific way to do this. I just hate to see a good plant die [grin]

Yep, halve or quarter it. I use a knife but you can use your hands if you like.
