Hi, I saw some 4 inch aloes for sale at Wal Mart. They were all green and look quite healthy. Questions are: should I buy them, and how do I choose a healthy aloe to buy?

Should? That would be up to you. A healthy aloe has firm green leaves right to the tips. Some irregularities on the bottom leaf or leaves (depending upon the size of the plant) are ok. It should have very healthy-looking new leave/s at the center of the rosette. If you try gently to pull it out of the pot, it should either resist or the whole rootball and dirt come cleanly from the pot. If that happens, the roots should have some white parts and NO mushiness. If you like it and want it, get an unglazed terra cotta pot for it, too.
