can i move my asparagus now?

They're sprouting! I wanted to move them before they started to grow but all of a sudden, there they are. Will I kill them if I try to relocate now? They have been in the ground for about 6 years now.

Thanks for any thoughts!

I'm not sure they take well to transplanting when mature. I tried moving one once to fill in a gap in the row and I just got a puny little plant that just sat there for a couple of years before dieing. I had thought about moving my asparagus patch a couple of years ago also, but could find no information at all online about transplanting mature plants.

If you try it, maybe you should try to take just the smaller, younger crowns instead of trying to save the biggest ones. I'm just guessing here though.

If you move the Asparagus you will kill it.

The roots can be up to 10 feet from the plants.

I did a lot of reading on Asparagus before I put my bed in last year.

thanks guys! I guess it will stay for this year. I found some info saying it could be transplanted anytime while still dormant, which it obviously isnt anymore. Maybe next spring Ill brave it. Here's the site I was looking at:

Hmmm..... I just went on Google and typed in "transplanting asparagus" and it was the first on the list.

www.motherearthnews.com is the website and maybe search on transplanting asparagus?
