for mothers day my husband bought me a dwarf granny smith apple tree! it is about 6 ft tall and since we planted it, it has started to sprout new baby branches. i have never had an apple tree before, so how old do they have to be before fruiting????

It all depends on the tree and the growing conditions. I planted a small orchard of 13 apple trees 10 years ago and I got fruits on a few of them by the second year, but the latest ones took about 5 years.
