Is my aloe plant sick?

I have an aloe plant that is only about a year old. I over-watered it at first and it became quite mushy and brown. I have since replanted it (with a bottom layer of gravel for drainage) and it has improved. However, the aloe gel within the plant is brown and smells very strong...not rotten, but very 'green'. Is this due to the previous drowning, or maybe its young age?
Is the brown gel still useful for medicinal purposes?
Aloe Experts please respond!
Thx

don't use the brown gel. give the plant time to heal. you can help it by cutting off the bad fronds one at the time. (cut a bad one, give a new one time to start, cut another bad one, etc). that it is improving is good, and it will come back before you know it!
