We have the oppurtunity here for so much game meat that you would never have to buy meat at the store. We do raise our own pork though. Does anyone have any unique game recipes for me to try? (moose, deer, partridge, pheasant)

We get a ton of deer meat here....I'm not too big on it, but my husband eats tons of it....I'll have to pass on what you said njoynit about wrapping it in bacon....I bet he would like that....I actually bought him a venison cookbook for his birthday next month, he is always looking for new ideas on how to cook up his deer meat... I agree!!
But, there are alot of people who enjoy it.
And I do not agree with the method of it, but
acknowledge that they need some type of thining process and wish there was a better way,
But I applaud those who not only take them for their heads, (Yick) but who do things with the meat and skins, etc. Instead of throwing parts away!!!
This is one subject you don't want to get me one!!
Is the sh**ting end of it. I lived in the country for 30 some odd years (and they were odd) but
I also worked in the restaurant business and heard many, many tales of drunken hunters......
Don't get me started ..........

Just eat!!!
And enjoy!!

I used to say poor bambi, but if bambi weren't killed then bambi would be overpopulating the area....there are sooooo many of them around here that driving at night is scary....we hit a huge one last year...... [tongue]

Anyway, they have to keep the population of them down.....my hubby never hunts just to kill something, he truly likes the meat...it is some of the leanest meat you can get....but I am not big on the taste of it.....

There is a ban on hunting deer in our area because of the low numbers, we have to travel about 4 hrs for the hunting zone and your only allowed to kill one buck. Moose is totally different, you have to pay to put your name in a draw and if you are lucky you have 3 days only to get one. Only about 1 on 50 gets their name pulled so there is alot of poaching.

We need to transfer some of our deer in Amherst to your area, the people are up in arms about it,
The area used to be deer country, then developers come in, tear out everything, put in houses and expect the deer to go else where, then they don't allow hunting and the population is supposedly getting out of control. Many car accidents with deers running out into the road.
But there needs to be some happy medium between the two. It's a shame. They are sweet animals, they were here first, and I know they starve wihtout control,
My basic beef is HOW THEY ALLOW THEM TO BE HUNTED!

I just get sick to my stomache thinking of them goof balls out in the fields!!! I'd say about 75% of them. The other skilled hunters I'm not concerned about in the least.
I know they take it seriously.

Here's a site I saw on some tips for it.????
http://www.avenison.com/cooking.html

I've also heard if you soak it in apple juice or vinegar 24 hours, takes the gamie taste out of it.
(change water every so often...)
Or soak it overnight in salt water.

POOR BULLWINKLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh don't get me started on animal rights. Makes me sick (literally)how cruel people can be. [Mad] [Mad]

I don't mind if it is done HUMANELY !!!!!!!!!!!! In fact that is easier on the animal than a predator animal would do!!!!!!!!!!
I can't even watch those National Geographic programs where they show natural predation attacks. [Eek!] [tears]

If my cats get something I have to go out and either save it or kill it the rest of the way. Can't watch it suffer! [tears]

Major pet peeve is people buying from pet stores.(Puppy Mills) [Mad] [Frown]

My thing with hunting is the men who hunt and then don't use the meat....I mean....why not eat it??? It's free meat....it's no different than eating cow, pig, or lamb, or chicken....It's just that you can't go to the grocery store and buy it....you kill it yourself....Also my husband hunts with a bow and arrow which to me is a better way to hunt.....It makes it more of a challenge....It's too easy to go out and shoot one.....I always tell him that if I were to go along with him on a deer hunt that I'd be yelling at the deer to shoo it away....LOL I don't think I could watch him kill one....When he gets one he always tells my father in law that he is bringing me out to skin it....YEH RIGHT!!! I could never do that.....I don't even ever cook it....he cooks it and eats it...around where I live in the mountains venison is eaten by a lot of people....but we aren't all rednecks....LOL I never thought I would marry a hunter....I always went for the guys that were kind of athletic, but love does mysterious things.....LOL

The main route to our big city around here of 35,000 is nothing but dead animals around this time......seriously you can't drive a mile without seeing something dead....I don't ever want to drive at night anymore, when we hit that deer I was so panicked that I couldn't breathe....It was a huge one....and we hit it hard...messed the car up pretty bad, but we were okay.....

I do know we have a program around here where people that bag a deer can donate the meat to some organization that then gives it out to people in need.....I live close to the border of WV(2 mins away, literally) and I know that there are still a lot of poverty stricken areas there....not to stereotype....WV has gotten a bum wrap over the years....but I think there are many families over there that receive the meat....which makes me happy to know that someone is eating it.

Ok, tried to stay out of the fray, but here is my 2 cents worth. First, let me agree with you on most of it.

But... growing up, if we couldn't have hunted (or had donated meat), fished, and raised our own chickens and pigs, I wouldn't have eaten many days. So...

My husband is a hunter, he is also a hunter education volunteer for the state of Georgia's department of natural resources. Our beliefs coincide pretty well and our take on it is this:

Don't dog hunt, there is no sport if you have the animal sent to you in a panic. still hunting & bow hunting are ok, IF you can either eat the meat or give it to a familiy that would eat it.

there are enough ways to cook game (not just venison, but turkeys, pheasant, doves, quail, wild boars, rabbits, squirrels, etc.) that there is no reason to let it waste.

AND... It has been determined that for folks with digestive issues (cystic fybrosis, cancer, aids, etc..) the wild game is not only leaner, but usually easier to digest.

Now, I can clean a deer, fish, rabbit, etc as well as the men, but since I DON'T HAVE TO, I don't! But I cook it, eat it, and take it if it is offered by a hunter wih too much. My only problem eating is is right after I have had to put it up for the freezer. But I am that way about beef and chicken!

By the way, we all carry fire arms in our cars to put any large animals out of there misery if they are hit on a highway. Leaving one to die a miserable death is the most inhumane of all.
by catlover on October 25, 2003 08:12 PM
Ohhh Jiffy that is another pet peeve...someone hits an animal stop and take it somewhere or call to have it taken care of. People around here just drive on by. I don't care how late I am to an appt. I will wait til animal control comes to pick them up....or I will take it to the nearest vet and pay to have it put to sleep. Found animal control and the cops get there a lot faster when you tell them the animal is injured and a threat to neary kids. [thumb] I always carry gloves, blankets, and a hammer(only for a small animal) just in case. Unfortunately...we are not allowed to carry guns here without special permits and then to fire it would be a whole new issue. [Frown]

Hunting with Bow and Arrow is "not always" done humanely by some people. Hope your husband is accurate!!!! [tears]

Yes I eat plenty of meat and the hauling and kill process is sometimes not very humane as well. Was forced as a kid to eat turtle in Mexico and later on after eating it we found the torture those turtles went through and I WILL NEVER EAT TURTLE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!

Veal is another pet peeve issue!!!!!!! [Mad] [kitty]

My husband is very accurate with his bow....he is always practicing on it.....He's a good shot....Unless he has a clean shot he won't take it......

I'm not a vegetarian and to me people eating deer meat is not different than eating chicken or steak....I'm sure that the companys that put the frozen meat in our grocery stores aren't always humane to the animals......I wish they were though, but my point is...we eat meat that is bought in a store, that has been raised just to be killed, at least deer have somewhat of a life even if for a short time....Plus I think it depends on the population of deer in each area....like I said we are swamped with them here....they are all over the highways and in peoples yards....my sister had 3 of them run through her yard the other day and we don't live in the country....She said she sees them all the time....(there is a big empty mountain above the houses where she lives....but the hill she lives on is very heavily populated).

My husbands deer meat is never wasted....even though I don't eat it, my husband does....and if he has extra he shares it with his family or friends....they make bologna out of it, or deer steaks....

Certainly if the area where a person lives is sparse with deer then they shouldn't be allowed to hunt, but here if we don't hunt, each year the population increases dramatically. Actually the DNR urges hunters to take their maximum limit here in my area to help keep the population down...
